Log Reel End

Description
This is half of a log-reel. A log-reel was where the rope used with a chip log was stored. The chip log was used to measure the speed that a ship was travelling, by counting the amount of knots in the rope that passed through your hands over a certain period of time. This log-reel was thereby used to make sure that the rope was protected so that the accuracy of this instrument would not be undermined.
