Extract of a Prayer or Hymn

Description
Annotated section of a brown envelope. On the reverse of the envelope the following prayer or hymn was hand written. Elizabeth Thomas copied the extract and sent this to her husband William.

'Jesu give the weary, calm + sweep repose
With thy tenderest blessing may mine eyelids else
Grant it little children, visions bright of the
Guard the sailors tossing, on the deep blue sea.
Comfort weary sufferer, watching late in pain
Those who plan some evil, from their sin restrain
Thro’ the long night watches, may thine angels spread
Their white wings above me, watching round my bed
When the morning wakens, then may I arise
Puree & fresh & sinless, in thy holy eyes
Glory to the father, Glory to the son
And to the blest spirit, whilst all ages run
Amen’
