Book published to accompany the National Maritime Museum’s temporary exhibition Turner & the Sea. The exhibition explores the maritime-themed work of J.M.W. Turner and his contemporaries in the late 18th early 19th Century art world. The focus is on their portrayal of ships at sea and maritime communities in the UK and around the world. The works included span Turner’s career from the late 1790s to the early 1800s and encompass the developments and maritime affairs at this time.
The book includes articles on the themes explored within the exhibition and expands upon the content within it. There are also illustrations of many of the pieces within the collection including some of Turner’s more unknown studies and watercolour sketches.
