HM Submarine Swordfish disappeared during her twelfth patrol, after departing Portsmouth on the 7th November 1940.

For many years she was thought to have been sunk by German Destroyers but this was not the case. In June 1983 a diver, Martin Woodward found her final resting place in the waters of the Isle of Wight. She never made it into French territory.
