Shipwright's Tool Chest
Description
These were generally used as a tool chest by the shipwright in the workshop. They were of a robust construction to carry a range of tools which would have been a heavy loading. Typically the handles would be made of rope, and the boxes painted, not varnished, in sombre and hardwearing colours often black. The interiors of the chests were fitted with shelves and a few drawers and wooden cleats for saws fitted into the top of the lid.
Inside the lid are 9 cleats and 12 inside the chest for securing tools. Tools found inside comprise, hand saw, caulking mallet, 3 block planes, an oil/sharpening stone, external callipers, wooden rule, scratch block, sanding block, hand brace, 2 ft. folding carpenters rule and a steel tally labelled M HORSHAM. The brass nameplate on the front of this box bears 'M.H.J.HORSHAM Shipwright MCD'. It belonged to F.C. Horsham, who worked in the Dockyard.
